Versus in Sermo is an artwork that stands as a form of resistance in the struggle between sustainability and exploitation in a northern context. The installation, that will be displayed at the 2016 Barents Spektakel, advocates for people spread over 4 countries in the Barents Region who often have no voice when the short-term exploitation of resources is taking place – a process that results in governments and big business damaging the environment and producing flow on effects that impact everyone.
Using imagery from human history, the artists aim to provide a ‘flash forward’ vision to the outcomes of continued exploitation and degradation of northern lands. The eight-sided lavo represents the eight seasons of the Sami calendar and each side is covered with images from the human story of the north. As a fire engulfs the structure all that will remain is the stark, steel frame that has been blackened by the inferno.
The installation will be visible throughout the Barents Spektakel and the artists will provide video documentation as point of reference for the viewer.
