In her video work Trace, Natalia Egorova explores the unknown, unexpected and shadowy world of underground bunker systems. The artist draws together two layers which at first seem to be not connected; the playful innocence of children’s drawings and the harsh concrete textures of the bunker.
Attached to the projector is a camera that documents the performance. The viewer is taken ever deeper into the man made cave while the drawings move across the walls, bringing them to life and playing with the space. The fear of the unexpected and the anticipation of what be might around the next corner gives the viewer the mixed feelings of curiosity and trepidation, like that of Alice in Wonderland.
Like Maria Gradin’s Peeping Barents, the viewer needs to follow the direction of the artist closely to get an idea of the world being presented.
