Maria Gradin invites us to peep into the surprising world made up of collected impressions manifested as photographs of Barents Russia.
“During a research tour in the northwestern Russia I found the suburban area outside Arkhangelsk filled of life. Living places tells us about living conditions. Living conditions tells us about time. And time about living life.”
Gradin’s work takes form as a 2×3 metre fence with peep holes drilled and images visible through the openings. Through interactions with the instillation, the audience observes Gradin’s world through only the tiny glimpses made available, allowing space for personal narratives and assumptions to take hold.
“Through the holes in the fence you can find bits and pieces from my impressions and maybe the story is different from what you are inspecting. From the details I will invite the audience to reflect and make up their own stories.”
