The Eastern Sami Museum in Neiden was built in 2009, but has not opened yet due to different problems with the building. Some claim that the reason for the problems is that they have not asked the spirits under the soil for permission to build whilst others say that this custom of asking these spirits is not an Eastern Sami one. In this short film made for Barents Spektakel, Tårnes looks at stories about the building, the place and different beliefs about the supernatural. What does the history of a place mean? Should you always ask for permission, even if you don’t believe – just in case you are wrong?
